In the modern world, people and industry should use the newest technology at our disposal to make our life more comfortable, safe and simple. We can use AI do not only in industry but also in our private life.
One of the first commercial examples using AI in the industry is a power plant in Berlin. This
power plant has a turbine which works by gas. It works like an aircraft engine. During the gas combustion, energy is released making the turbine shaft rotate and that is why the mechanical energy of the turbine is converted into electrical energy at the output of the generator.
What happens if a gas turbine is out of order? How can we predict this situation?
Everybody knows that electricity is one of the most important things in our life. It is used not only to boil the water for your spaghetti, but also for medicine clinics and other very (really, extremely, utterly) important parts of infrastructure, and we can’t allow the interruption of electricity supply for it.
AI can cover this problem. The first electrical plant which has started using AI for control the
state of vital systems was constructed in Berlin by Siemens. They use more than 700 different sensors and control more then 5000 parameters. But extremely important part of this systems is the software part. Siemens engineers created the digital twin of gas turbine. It’s a digital copy of this machine which has the same specifications and the same parameters and if one parameter of the real turbine has a different reading from a parameters of the digital twin the personnel can make additional checks and be sure that the machine works correctly. It can also help the energy plant to predict the future problems and make a plan for future service.
This technology helps save money for capex expenses as the usual energy plant has a double turbine for the situation (case) that one of them will out of order.
It’s just one case how modern technology makes our life simpler and safer. What do you think are the next steps? Will AI ever be able to replace a human and do all the work for us?
